6/7 Update

Okay, Ben's sleep study is actually tonight, and he should come home tomorrow.  Evelyn should still come home the next day.

There are at least 3 different neonatologists in the NICU and at least 4 nurse practitioners and each will come by and look at the babies and change their orders.  We had a nurse practitioner tell us that the sleep study would be last night, but at the same time a neonatologist called our house and left a message to tell us that it would be scheduled for tonight.  Except she couldn't say that in the message so she just said to call her back.  We didn't because we got home late and thought we had already talked to her representative at the hospital.  Anyway, it really is tonight, which means he should be discharged tomorrow.

We went in at 8:00 AM like we usually do thinking the sleep study had already been done.  I looked at their apnea charts and there was an episode noted on Ben's where his heart rate dropped and his oxygen saturation dropped simultaneously.  We see this happen all day because every time they move the monitors the readings are erratic so we didn't believe he actually had an episode.  Our concern was that because they noted it, they would require him to stay 5 more days.  We asked all day to speak to someone about the results of our sleep study but we couldn't get answers from anyone until 5:00 PM when the doctor currently in charge came by.  She told us that the sleep study hadn't even happened and that she would review their charts.  After about 30 minutes she came back and told us that the event on the chart was not worth noting so he would be eligible for his test tonight and discharge tomorrow.  I tried to convince her that the test should have been last night but even if I'm right there is not much she can do about that. 

So even though we had a more stressful day than we could have if we had gotten the information 8 hours earlier the result was not bad.  Ben and Evie will have to spend less time apart and we will get them both home very soon, assuming there are no more administrative mixups. 

We watched "Never Shake a Baby" while we were waiting for the doctor to come by and we learned to never shake a baby.  We also watched the infant CPR video.  They usually make you watch those on the day you check out so we have that out of the way for tomorrow.
